The Minnesota beauty was born Nathalie Kay Hedren in the small town of New Ulm.  Her bright blonde hair and blue green eyes helped her land local modeling jobs in high school, until she turned eighteen and moved to New York City to start a professional modeling career. Hedren was a model throughout the 1950s, acting in commercials and appearing on magazine covers. In 1952 Hedren married advertising executive Peter Griffith. The couple had one daughter, Melanie, before divorcing in 1961. Melanie Griffith would later go on to have her own successful acting career.

In 1961, the famous suspense and thriller director Alfred Hitchcock noticed Hedren in one of her commercials and gave her the lead in his 1962 film The Birds. Hitchcock was infamous for picking blonde beauties to be his leading ladies, and Hedren instantly became a star. Hedren signed a seven-year contract with the director, filming her second film Marnie with him in 1964. In the last thirty years Hedren has staked many claims about her difficult relationship working with Hitchcock. Hedren has accused Hitchcock of making overt sexual advances towards her, and of being possessive over her career. An HBO film was made about the struggle between Hedren and Hitchcock in 2012 titled, The Girl.

Hedren would go on to make a number of films in the years following her Hitchcock era, including A Countess From Hong Kong and Tiger By the Tail, as well as countless television roles. In the 1980s she became an avid animal-rights activist, making a film about African lions as well as establishing her own non-profit and wild animal preservation, The Hedren Shambala Preserve.

Happy Birthday Tippi!
